Radio Interview with Ron Letterman, WXPZ (Feb.2000)
Ron:
Good afternoon, 8 minutes after 3. Ron on the road home with you and Watermark
is on the road headed for Jammin' Java, ...no I'm sorry... yes, yeah it's
tonight, Jammin Java, this evening. I don't know what I'm thinking about.
Tonight, two shows, 7 and 9 p.m., that's gonna be a good time and I know
Roshare is expected a big crowd down at Jammin Java tonight and it's always
a lot of fun, you never know who you're gonna meet when you head over
there, and that's exactly what happened some time ago when Denise Harper
happen to stop into Jammin Java and happened to stop into a group of guys
by the name of Forever Moon. So we have all of those folks here with us
today... I guess everybody's here, right?
Guys:
Yeah
Ron:
Right, yesterday when I talked to you, you said one person might not be
here but from the looks of things, everyone must be here cause it's a
pretty packed studio. Good afternoon guys, Scott Patterson is the first
person I first talked to ... now which one is Scott?
Scott:
Right here.
Ron:
Ok, he raised his hand so you can step on up to the mic there, and even
though you introduced me to everyone in Forever Moon earlier this afternoon,
I'm gonna let you tell us whose here this afternoon, so I don't mess it
up.
Scott:
Alright, well thanks for having us Ron. First, my name is Scott Patterson
and also in the band is my twin brother Sean Patterson, another brother
connection with Andy Flynn and Danny Flynn and our drummer Danny Zaverl.
Ron:
Ok, so we've got a Scott, a Sean, an Andy and two Danny's?
Scott:
That's right.
Ron:
Ok, I've got that ok so far. OK, so this afternoon they've brought in
guitars and all kinds of instruments. I don't even know what to call them.
Therefore, I wouldn't have a shot at playing any of it. What's this laying
here?
Scott:
This is a Honer 26 key melodica, and we got it about 2 months ago for
acoustic sets, we decided that we just wanted to throw a little variety
in and allow a creative God to be very creative with us. So we've enjoyed
using it the little bit that we've had the opportunity.
Ron:
Well, I'll tell you what, this afternoon it's already been sounding real
good in here. Tonight, Forever Moon will be heading to the All About You
Cafe in Laurel, and we've also brought along Tony Rodermel, did I say
your name right Tony?
Tony:
Yeah.
Ron:
Ok, well you'll have to step up here close with me. They're coming in
there tonight to the All About You Cafe, and we're going to get you to
tell us a little bit about that in a few minutes and we're also gonna
hear some music by Forever Moon. First of all, just so people will have
it on their minds, tell folks what time the show is tonight and maybe
who it's targeted too.
Tony:
The All About You Cafe is in Laurel, Delaware and the target audience
is 18 to 25. The Lord put a passion on my heart to reach out to this age
group of college and career students. It seems like after high school,
the church (our church along with other churches), haven't had much to
offer. So that's really our target audience and we're excited about having
Forever Moon tonight and that will be at 7 o'clock.
Ron:
7 o'clock tonight, alright well we're going to talk more about tonight's
concert and we're gonna have a lot to talk about with Forever Moon this
afternoon, we have a song. Do you have song all lined up to play for us
in a couple of minutes?
Scott:
Yeah we do, it's actually one we wrote and its called "Fly Away."
Ron:
Ok, I'll tell you what, stick around folks, we're gonna do that one, live
coming up here at the light FM coming up next.
[Commerical]
Ron:
... it's 43 degrees here at the Light FM, I promised you that we would
have a song live on the radio, and while we were doing the break, I discovered
one instrument that I could play if I had to.. [shakes the soft shaker]
see I'm good at that. I'm not going to try that during the song.
Scott:
We're not going to let Ron play that during the song though.
Ron:
And that's probably a good thing! Anyway, that is the extent of my musical
ability. So before we start this song, why don't you tell me a little
bit about it. And you wrote it yourself?
Scott:
That's right, this is actually one of the first songs we put together
as a band, it's called Fly Away and basically what it's about it the struggle
between the old man and the new man. The bible says that whoever is in
Christ is a new creation, the old is gone, the new has come and yet in
our lives, we often struggle with the old and the new man, deciding which
man is gonna have priority in our lives. That's a struggle that we have
had as a band and through conversations talking with other people that
they have had as well. And basically that's the motivation behind this
song and it basically talks about when we are finally able to give ourselves
over to Christ, it's in our weakness that he can me made strong. So this
song is called Fly Away.
[FM plays Fly Away]
Ron:
Absolutely wonderful! And Forever Moon will be coming to Lambjam 2000
and that's exciting. Great job guys!
Guys:
Thank you.
Ron:
Tony must be really excited, come on up here, you must be excited thinking
about these guys coming to the All About You Cafe tonight. A little while
ago we had some calls coming in from people who wanted to know a little
more about the All About You Cafe. Now, Forever Moon is going to be there
tonight, so tell people how they can get in touch with you to come out
and see you guys.
Tony:
Alright, the All About You Cafe is an outreach of Gumboro Fellowship Church
and this evening is co-sponsored in part by Fourth Man Ministries. I would
like to take the time to thank them for their interest and the blessing
they have been for their help to have Forever Moon here. We're in Laurel,
Delaware at a coffee shop called Travel Perks...
Ron:
Ok, alright, what we're doing this afternoon is, anyone who has visited
our new studio, knows that it's pretty large, but, it's also pretty packed
this afternoon. We have how many people here? 3,5,6,7 and counting myself,
8 people plus guitars. Tell me about some of the instruments. Tell us
about this again.
Sean:
This is a melodica, and like I said we just got this not long ago and
again it's just one of the toys to kind of mix it up and keep it interesting
for ourselves and for everybody else. Especially with acoustic stuff,
many places aren't too big so it's hard to do a full show with electric
guitars, which we normally do, so we kind of buy these little things to
throw them in and give me something else to do.
Ron:
And then incase I show up, you brought the shaker.
Sean:
That's right.
Ron:
And then we have a drummer, and you're one of the Danny's right?
Danny Z:
Right. I have a conga, that's pretty much all I brought today.
Ron:
Ok, so he's playing the conga down here then we have some guitar players
and then its Scott-- did I get it right?
Scott:
Yeah.
Ron:
Scott was singing that time. So do you ever change places as far as singing
or do you mostly do all the singing or what?
Scott:
I think with the songs we've put together thus far, I predominantly sing.
But that's another thing that we want to try to mix up and make it interesting
for all of us. I mean, we're 5 individual's with different creative abilities
and we just want to make sure that people are free to do some different
things, but pretty much this is our normal set up. Usually we'll have
2 guitar players which would be Sean and Andy, and Danny Flynn will play
the bass, and today he's on the acoustic bass, and Danny Z will be on
the drums.
Ron:
Good, so we're gonna hear some more music this afternoon, right?
Guys:
Yep.
Ron:
Good, that what we want to do. We want to hear some more music from you,
but we want to talk about Lambjam, in a little while we hope to get Bill
Sammons on. Everyone knows Bill, Bill is the festival director for Lambjam
and he's gonna talk more about what's gonna happen August 19th. I can
tell people this, tomorrow night will be the very first opportunity to
get your Lambjam 2000 tickets and behind me, some of you can see a t-shirt
here, I think it's behind Tony... that's gonna be the ticket. If you can
hand me that for just a second, I can tell people just what it looks like.
Sean:
I want one.
Ron:
You want one! Every year we have a different Lambjam logo and so this
has the LJ2K logo and that's unique and it says on the front August 19
Lambjam 2000 and its even got the web address www.lambjam.org so please
stop by that website and check it out and on the back there's a big thank
you to all of the sponsors of Lambjam 2000. So tomorrow night, people
will be able to purchase these for the very first time at the Newsong
concert and that's gonna be at Gumboro Fellowship Church. So we'll talk
more about that this afternoon, and more music on the way from Forever
Moon on the Light FM.
[Commercial]
Ron:
It's almost 3:30 here at the Light FM and we have Forever Moon in the
studio this afternoon. This is a rare thing for me, I don't always get
to have a full band in the studio with me, but one of the guys at the
station said to me earlier today, "you know David Letterman has his
own band and we think it's about time that Ron Letterman has one too."
[Laughing] So you guys can be the official road home band. So whenever
you're in town, drop by.
Scott:
Great, we'd love too.
Andy:
Plus I think we're all excited about this opportunity and we all wanted
to be here for it.
Ron:
Good, we're glad you're here. Now tell us where you come from. I know,
but not everybody else does.
Scott:
Well we're based out of Baltimore, Sean and I, obviously we grew up together
since we're brothers, and Dan and Andy grew up together cause they are
brothers and we kind of met when we were in 6th grade going into middle
school and ever since then we've been friends. We've started playing music
together, at least the four of us.
Dan:
About a year ago, maybe.
Andy:
Well actually camp about 3 or 4 years ago maybe? We got the opportunity
to play a couple of songs for kids at a camp and I think that's kind of
where it started from and we just realized we wanted to get together and
play as a band.
Ron:
That sounds great.
Scott:
Yeah, so about a year ago we started to. We just had a casual conversation
and thought we really enjoyed doing this, we thought God has given us
some level of talent and we try to be humble in that, cause I don't think
we're the best musician's ever, but I think that God has given us a talent
that we want to use to give back to him basically and to share the gospel.
Dan:
We never really expected to get this far after a year of playing and we've
really been blessed by God with some of the opportunity we've had in the
past year and coming up in the next year.
Scott:
Definitely so, we've been playing together for now about a year and like
Danny said, the Lord continues to bless really us with opportunities.
We've been playing a lot more than we ever thought we would, but that's
what's so amazing about God, you know, he takes what little bit that your
faithful with and you give to him and he just multiplies it back to you
and its just been tremendous and we're really excited about being here
today.
[Song]
Ron:
...We have another song for you, Forever Moon is going to do another song...
and Sean right?
Sean:
That's right.
Ron:
Man, I'm getting good at this. What are you going to do?
Sean:
We're gonna do something a little more up beat, a little more rockin'
so right after the break, you guys stick around, check it out.
Ron:
Alright, that's up next...
[Break]
Ron:
3:42 here at the Light FM and we have Forever Moon here in the studio
with us this afternoon. Forever Moon will be at the All About You Cafe
tonight at 7, and that's in Laurel and then on the Lambjam stage August
19th. So your going to do a song for us live, tell us about it.
Scott:
This song is called "Refined." I guess the motivation behind
it when we wrote it, when we come into a relationship with Christ ,the
greatest thing about that is that God loves us for who we are right now,
and he loves us unconditionally and he wants to be in a relationship with
us. But being in that relationship, God wants to change us, he doesn't
just want to keep us the same way, he wants to make us more like Christ.
And when we're able to do that, God comes into out hearts and begins to
refine us and make us more like his son, so that's what the motivation
is behind this song and its called "Refined."
[FM plays Refined]
Ron:
Thank you so much guys, what a great song, tell us the title again.
Scott:
That song is called "Refined."
Ron:
"Refined," ok. So fly away and refined so far this afternoon,
who knows what else is coming up before it's all said and done. This is
fun.
Guys:
Yeah.
Ron:
We're kind of working without a net.
Sean:
Oh, we always work without a net.
Ron:
When you're doing it live on the radio like this, and everybody is out
there like this, it's just like being on a concert stage someplace.
Dan:
Great.
Ron:
It'd be different if we were in the next room and put it on tape and go
back and play with it but you guys are doing a perfect job.
Scott:
Thank you.
Ron:
Thanks so much. Tomorrow night will be your first opportunity to purchase
tickets for Lambjam and Forever Moon will be coming to Lambjam 2000 and
I'm going to take a chance here and ask Bill Sammons to give us a call
this afternoon and talk about Lambjam and hopefully this is Bill on the
line. Good afternoon, you're on the Light FM.
Bill:
You're not the only one working without a net!
Ron:
Oh man, you're working without a net too aren't you?
Bill:
Good job, hey- I like the house band..
Ron:
Do you? I think this is good, if I can get them from Baltimore over here
at least once in a while, I'll be happy.
Bill:
First thing you got to do is learn how to say Baltimore. I imagine they
can help you with that.
Ron:
Balmere?
Bill:
Balmere.
Scott:
That was better, a little better inflection.
Ron:
Well, I'll have to work on that.
Bill:
You enunciate too good...
Ron:
...It is about 5 minutes in front of 4 o'clock here at the Light FM. I
hear a little guitar tuning going on here and that's because Forever Moon
is in the studio with us and we're going to do a song here in just a couple
of minutes. They're going to do a song, not me. They won't even let me
play the shaker. Right now, metro weather is sponsored by the Sussex pregnancy
care center here in Georgetown.
Ron:
...Ok, now one thing I want to find out from you before we kick off this
next song, where did Forever Moon come from?
Scott:
I'm glad that you asked Ron, we actually get asked that more than anything
else. When we were searching for names, we wanted to do something that
was creative and different and in my quiet times I ran across Psalm 89,
which is a psalm of David, where God is promising David that his line
is going to endure forever like the moon. So that's kind of where the
name comes from and we see ourselves a lot in the imagery of the moon
as analogous with our relationship with Christ in that we're not the source
of the light, but we reflect that light in the darkness, much like the
moon reflects the light of the sun at night.
Ron:
That's good. You really put some thought into that.
Scott:
We try.
Ron:
That's excellent. So what are you going to do for us, music wise?
Scott:
We're going to go ahead and do another song for you. This is actually
another early song that we put together but one of our favorites, this
one is called the only world I know. And basically it's talking about.
I think that a lot of times people have misconceptions about Christ and
a lot of people try to weigh it on "what do I have to give up in
order to follow Christ?" and we kind of look at it as "what
do I gain?" and in addition to eternal life we gain some peace that
is brought on by the spirit of God and this just talks a little about
taking that step of faith and how when we do take that step of faith,
God is always right there to meet us, he's never fails in doing that,
so this one is called the only world I know.
[FM plays The Only World I Know]
Ron:
Thank you so much Forever Moon on the Light FM. They're going to be at
the All About You Cafe tonight. You know, whenever you finish you're song,
I have this instinct to pull the channel down because I'm thinking of
cd players. I'm thinking about, if I don't turn that channel down, the
next song is roll. It's unusual for me to have a full band in the studio.
Forever Moon will be at Lambjam 2000, tickets are on sale tomorrow night
for the very first time at the Newsong concert. And if the guys will stick
around just a few minutes after 4, and do one more song for us anyway,
so we'll do that and then what? Sound check right?
Scott:
Yeah, we've got to get over to the All About You Cafe by 5 o'clock to
sound check for tonight but we hope to see a lot of you guys out there
tonight.
Ron:
18 to 25 year old singles need to head over there tonight. It's a free
concert, and we've got another Lambjam artist on the way with Jonathan
Pierce then we'll hear more with Forever Moon here on the Light FM.
[Break, Song]
Ron:
The Light FM, 94.3 and 101.3, we are your station for today's Christian
Music. That's from Jonathan Pierce, "Should Have Been Loving You"
and Jonathan Pierce is coming to Lambjam 2000 and so is Forever Moon.
Forever Moon is with us this afternoon incase you just tuned in. And you
guys are going to do at least one more song for me right?
Guys:
That's right.
Ron:
Just one more! You like it when people do that don't you? Well, I'll tell
you what, we have James Dobson's family minute coming up, the bible quiz
at 4:15 and between now and then, another song from Forever Moon.
[Break for Bible quiz]
Ron:
It is time once again to have Forever Moon do a song for us cause they
have to head to the All About You Cafe and sound check to get set for
tonight's concert at 7pm, before you go, you're going to do one more song
for us and you've got a couple of things you want to tell us about Scott.
Scott:
Yeah, first of all we'd like to let everyone know we do have a webpage
and that is www.forevermoon.com. and you can just find out some more information
about us, our schedule, and some pictures to see what we actually look
like... and put some faces with these voices.
Ron:
A good looking group of guys.
Sean:
And you can sign our message board... it's always cool to get feedback.
Scott:
Yeah, please if you get the chance to stop by, leave us a little note
on the message board or to our individual email addresses. We always like
to get feedback to hear what you guys think about our performance here
this afternoon. And we look forward to seeing a lot of you guys out at
the All About You Cafe tonight... And one final thing, we don't have a
cd out yet but we're currently looking into that, its just financially,
the Lord has blessed us but we're not quite to the point yet where we
have the ability to do that just because of our busy schedules and college
and so forth. So we're looking into doing that in May-- we've actually
been invited by the grammy-nominated group Smalltown Poets down to Atlanta,
Georgia to record some songs down there so we're very excited about that
possibility and if you'd like to get some more information on when our
cd comes out, please feel free to sign up on our mailing list via our
webpage and we'll get you out some more information when it's available.
Andy:
Just wanted to say thank you to you Ron and thank you for all listening
out there.
Ron:
No problem, we're happy to have you here. Ok, what are we going to do
now?
Sean:
Well, we're going to do our last song and it's called "Home Again"
and this song is pretty much just a praise song talking about the joy
of once you come into a relationship with Jesus and we go on to heaven,
just the joy we'll be able to find there and the love that is God, so
this song is called Home Again.
[FM plays Home Again]
